આ મેલ્ખીસેદેક, શાલેમનો રાજા અને પરાત્પર ઈશ્વરનો યાજક હતો, જયારે ઇબ્રાહિમ રાજાઓની હત્યા કરીને પાછો આવ્યો, ત્યારે તેણે તેને મળીને આશીર્વાદ આપ્યો;

અને ઇબ્રાહિમે લડાઈમાં જે મેળવ્યું હતું તેનો દસમો ભાગ તેને આપ્યો. તેના નામનો પહેલો અર્થ તો ‘ન્યાયીપણાનો રાજા,’ પછી ‘શાલેમનો રાજા,’ એટલે ‘શાંતિનો રાજા’ છે.

તે પિતા વગરનો, માતા વગરનો અને વંશાવળી વગરનો હતો, તેના આરંભનો સમય કે આયુષ્યનો અંત ન હતો, પણ તે ઈશ્વરના પુત્રના જેવો સદા યાજક રહે છે.

તો જેને આદિપિતા ઇબ્રાહિમે લૂટમાંનો દસમો ભાગ આપ્યો, તે કેવો મહાન હશે એનો વિચાર કરો.

અને ખરેખર, લેવીના સંતાનમાંના જેઓ યાજકપદ પામે છે, તેઓને લોકોની પાસેથી એટલે ઇબ્રાહિમથી ઉત્પન્ન થયેલા પોતાના ભાઈઓની પાસેથી, નિયમશાસ્ત્ર પ્રમાણે દસમો ભાગ લેવાની આજ્ઞા છે ખરી;

પણ જે તેઓની વંશવાળીનો ન હતો, તેણે ઇબ્રાહિમની પાસેથી દસમો ભાગ લીધો અને જેને વચનો મળ્યાં હતાં તેને તેણે આશીર્વાદ આપ્યો.

પણ આ તો સમથી થાય છે, એટલે જેમણે તેમને કહ્યું કે, ‘પ્રભુએ સમ ખાધા, અને તે પસ્તાવો કરનાર નથી, કે તું સનાતન યાજક છે, આવી રીતે તે તેમનાંથી યાજક થયા.’”

માટે જેઓ તેમની મારફતે ઈશ્વરની પાસે આવે છે, તેઓનો સંપૂર્ણ ઉદ્ધાર કરવાને ઈસુ સમર્થ છે. કેમ કે દરેકને માટે મધ્યસ્થી કરવાને તેઓ સદા જીવંત રહે છે.

તેમના જેવા પ્રમુખ યાજકની આપણને જરૂર હતી, તે પવિત્ર, નિર્દોષ, નિષ્કલંક, પાપીઓથી તદ્દન અલગ છે, અને તેમને આકાશ કરતાં વધારે ઉચ્ચસ્થાને બિરાજવામાં આવેલા છે.

કેમ કે નિયમશાસ્ત્ર નબળા માણસોને પ્રમુખ યાજકો ઠરાવે છે; પણ નિયમશાસ્ત્ર પછી જે સમનું વચન છે તે તો સદાને માટે સંપૂર્ણ કરેલા પુત્રને પ્રમુખ યાજક ઠરાવે છે.
